Andersson Dance / Name of the next song (2012)

Andersson Dance in co-production with Aarhus Theatre

Opened February 7th 2012 at Aarhus Teater, Aarhus.

Örjan Andersson commenced creating “Name of the next song” in 2011. The starting point of the piece was a 15-minute solo for the dancer Asher Lev, created in 20110. In this solo, Örjan Andersson and Asher Lev took a starting point from simple postures and movement from midevial imagery, captured in a pedestrain manner. The baking woman, the man carrying a candle, the boy turning a wheel, and so on. In the continuation of the creation three additional performers joined the process. Sculptured spaces were created for the four dancers, focusing on the relationship between lightness and darkness in the disparate tableux which connects through the piece.

Taking inspiration from the music of BJNilsen, themes of nature were incorporated into the choreographic material and elements in the costume. In the abstract creation it seems as if various characters appears from the darkness, from a time long ago, encountering themselves, the audience and each other.

Örjan Anderssons has continually had time, space and the relationship between these two terms and his current inspirations at the forefront of his choreographic work. In “Name of the next song” an dark, open space is the context for longer and briefer phsyical encounters in duetts and trios. Large portions are devoted to the dancer working within oneself, with certain phsyical tasks moulded into choreographic sequences. A collection of solos make up parts of the choreography, where the individual dancers shine through the choreographed material. It is personal and upclose, yet visually stunning in carefully crafted costumes by Nina Sandström.

BJ Nilsen (b,1975 Sweden) Is a sound and recording artist. His work is based on the sound of nature and its effect on humans. He primarily uses field recordings and electronic composition as a working method. For “Name of the next song” BJ Nilsen used exisitng material and produced new work for a 60-minute score. In these musical creations Örjan Andersson encountered poetic landscapes, an thread of inspiration that he took into the studio and to the dancers. The shift between an almost minimalistic soundscape and sometimes majestic blasts of sound is countered by a mixture of Örjan Anderssons signature, musical choreographic style. Speed and stillness, closeness and distance is deliberatley used to spatially inhabit the space and the viewer’s eye. In “Name of the next song” four dancers lash out of the darkness into a landscape of poetry and sound, drawing the spectator into a different choreographed world.

The work was performed the first time at Aarhus Teater in February 2012.
